How to Answer Comparison Questions in Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610)
Compare one feature at a time, use comparative language, and let the mark scheme show what is actually being rewarded.

Comparison questions can look straightforward because the instruction is short, but they test more than whether you know facts about two biological structures or processes. The answer has to make the relationship between them clear. You need to show what is similar, what is different and which features are actually relevant to the question. The most reliable way to do that is to compare one feature at a time. Instead of describing the first item in full and then moving to the second, pair the information so the contrast or similarity is visible immediately.
Start by identifying exactly what is being compared
Before writing, identify the two things in the question and the scope of the comparison. Cambridge may ask directly for a comparison, or it may ask you to describe differences and similarities. Either way, the wording tells you whether you need both sides of the comparison or only a particular type of contrast. A useful example from Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610) asks students to describe differences and similarities between the structure of a plant root hair cell and a bacterial cell. The question is worth five marks, so the task is not to write everything you know about both cells. It is to select structural features that can be compared directly.
Compare one feature at a time
The clearest structure is usually point by point. Choose one feature, state what is true for the first item and immediately connect it to the second. Then move to another feature. This prevents the answer from turning into two separate descriptions that the examiner has to compare for you. For the root hair cell and bacterial cell example, one direct difference is that a root hair cell has a nucleus, whereas a bacterial cell does not have a true nucleus. Another is that the root hair cell has mitochondria while a bacterial cell does not. A similarity is that both have a cell membrane. Each sentence deals with one shared feature and makes the relationship explicit.
Use comparative language to make the relationship obvious
Words such as "whereas", "while", "both", "unlike" and "in contrast" are useful because they make the comparison visible. They do not earn marks by themselves, and accurate Biology still matters, but they help you avoid writing disconnected facts. For example, "the root hair cell has linear DNA, whereas bacterial DNA is circular" is more obviously comparative than placing those facts in separate paragraphs. Likewise, "both cells contain ribosomes" makes the similarity explicit without unnecessary explanation.
Use the mark scheme to see what the question is rewarding
The mark scheme for this (0610) question is especially useful because it shows how the comparison is divided. It gives a total of five marks from a list of possible points, with differences capped at three and similarities capped at three. That means a response made entirely of differences cannot reach the full range available for this particular question, even if those differences are correct. The accepted differences include features such as a nucleus, mitochondria, a large permanent vacuole, the composition of the cell wall, the form of the DNA and the presence or absence of plasmids. Similarities include a cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, genetic material and ribosomes. The exact balance is specific to this question, which is why reading the wording and mark scheme matters more than following a universal formula.
Be precise rather than vague
Comparison answers become weak when the wording is too general. Saying one cell is "more complex" than another does not identify the structural feature being compared. Naming the nucleus, mitochondria, DNA form or vacuole gives the examiner something specific to credit. The same principle applies across Biology. If you compare aerobic and anaerobic respiration, "aerobic is better" is not useful. A precise comparison would state that aerobic respiration requires oxygen whereas anaerobic respiration does not, or that aerobic respiration releases more energy from glucose while anaerobic respiration releases less. Precision makes the biological relationship clear.
Include similarities when the wording requires them
Students sometimes treat "comparison" as another word for "differences". That can be risky. If the question explicitly asks for similarities and differences, both need attention. The root hair cell example makes that visible in the marking guidance: marks are available from both categories, and the total is built from a combination of valid points. On the other hand, if a question asks only for differences, do not waste time listing similarities. The safest habit is to follow the wording in front of you rather than assuming every comparison question has the same structure.
Tables can help, but the comparison matters more than the format
A simple table can be useful when there are several features to compare. Each row can represent one feature, with the two items placed side by side. This naturally encourages paired comparisons and makes it harder to forget one side. You do not need a table for every answer. Short questions can often be handled more naturally with paired sentences. The format is secondary; what matters is that each point is relevant, scientifically accurate and clearly comparative.
Match the number of points to the marks available
The mark allocation gives you a sense of how much material the question needs, but avoid rigid rules such as "one sentence per mark". Some questions cap the number of marks available from a particular category, as the root hair cell mark scheme does. Others may accept several alternatives. Use the question and its specific marking guidance to judge what counts as a distinct point. Also avoid repeating the same comparison in different words. Once you have compared the presence of a nucleus, rewriting the same idea as "bacteria have no membrane-bound nucleus" is not automatically a new point. Move to another relevant feature.
Check that every point actually compares
Before moving on, read the answer quickly and ask what feature each sentence is comparing. Have you stated what happens on both sides? Is the similarity or difference explicit? Is the biological terminology precise? If the question asks for both similarities and differences, have you covered both?
