Finishing a past paper can feel productive on its own. You have worked through the questions, checked the mark scheme and ended up with a score. The problem is that a score only tells you how that attempt went. It does not automatically tell you what to change before the next one. The most useful part of past-paper revision often begins after the paper is finished. A proper review should show you which topics, question types and habits are costing marks, then turn those weaknesses into specific practice. If you move straight into another paper without doing anything with the mistakes from the previous one, the same problems can simply repeat.

Mark the paper while the attempt is still fresh

Start by marking the paper carefully against the relevant mark scheme. Do this while you can still remember how you approached the questions, where you hesitated and which answers you were unsure about. That context makes it easier to understand why a mistake happened. Do not focus only on the total. Record enough detail to see what went wrong question by question. A lost mark on a definition is different from losing several marks because you misunderstood a topic, and a correct method with a careless error needs a different response from a method you did not know how to start.

Do not just write down the score

A percentage is useful for tracking progress over time, but it is a weak revision plan. "I got 62%" does not tell you what to study tonight, which skill needs more practice or whether the problem came from knowledge, timing or interpretation. Two students can get the same score and need completely different next steps. One may have strong knowledge but lose marks because longer answers are underdeveloped. Another may write well but have gaps across several topics. A third may know the content and still lose marks through rushed reading, missed command words or avoidable calculation errors. That is why your review should move from score to diagnosis. The question is not only "How many marks did I lose?" but "Why did I lose them?"

Classify the mistakes that matter

You do not need a complicated system. A few useful categories are enough to make patterns visible. Knowledge gaps are questions where you genuinely did not know the content. Application gaps happen when you know the topic but cannot use it in the context of the question. Question-reading errors come from missing a condition, command word or detail. Method errors appear when the approach itself is wrong. Timing problems show up when marks are lost because you ran out of time or rushed the end. If a question exposed missing knowledge, relearn that part of the syllabus. Turn each important mistake into an action

A good review ends with a next task. "Revise Chemistry" is too broad. "Practise two more mole-calculation questions without notes" is useful. "Read Biology chapter 7 again" may still be vague. "Relearn transport in plants, then attempt three structured questions on translocation" gives you something measurable. The action should match the reason for the mistake. If the problem was knowledge, relearn the content first. If the problem was applying knowledge, move into questions. If the problem was timing, repeat a similar section under a stricter time limit. If the problem was vague written answers, practise more questions that demand the same kind of explanation or comparison. This is where a past paper starts to guide the rest of your revision.

Correct the question, but do not stop there

Once you understand the error, correct the failed part of the answer. Write the missing idea, redo the method or rewrite the explanation properly. Simply reading the mark scheme can create the feeling that you have learned the correction when you have only recognised it. Recognition is easier than retrieval. Seeing the right answer and thinking "yes, I knew that" is not the same as producing it independently. Rewriting the failed part forces you to reconstruct the answer while the feedback is still fresh. Even a corrected answer does not prove the weakness is fixed. You may simply remember what you just saw. The next step is to test the same skill or topic with a different question.

Retest the same weakness later

A useful correction should survive beyond the original question. If you lost marks on photosynthesis, attempt another photosynthesis question later. If you struggled with a calculation method, find a fresh problem that uses it. If your explanations tend to stop before the reasoning is complete, practise another question that requires a developed explanation. The new question checks transfer. You are not trying to memorise the correction from one paper; you are trying to improve the underlying skill. You do not need another full paper every time you find a weakness. Often the best next step is narrower: use topical questions, a short quiz or a custom test to attack the area that caused the lost marks, then return to a full paper later to see whether the improvement holds up.

A mistake log can be useful, but only if it stays simple enough to maintain. Save the mistakes that reveal something important, including what went wrong and what you will do next. For example: "Business Paper 2, evaluation question. I used generic advantages and disadvantages but did not apply them closely enough to the case. Next action: practise two more case-based evaluation questions and check whether each paragraph uses the context." After several papers, patterns become easier to see. You might notice that one topic appears repeatedly, that you lose most marks on longer questions, or that your final section is consistently weaker because time is running out. These trends are more useful than one isolated percentage because they tell you what to change.

A simple sequence is enough: mark the paper, identify the important mistakes, classify why they happened, turn each one into an action, correct the failed parts, then retest the same weaknesses with fresh questions.

Do not let past papers become a collection exercise

It is easy to measure revision by how many papers you have completed. That can be misleading.
